Spencer Nakasako's Workshops

Spencer Nakasako has been running video workshops at VYDC for 15 years now. Back in the day, Spencer developed a series of simple exercises with an emphasis on storytelling rather than technical training. He brought in magazines and asked the youth to make up stories by creating cut-out storyboards. The results were teenage romance soap operas, gangster epics, and "Hoop Dreams"-type documentaries. He then brought in his own Hi8 camcorder and had students shoot the storyboards, complete with camera moves, dialogue, voice-over, and even sound effects, using the in-camera edit function.

Within a week, the students had made their first short movies, complete with titles and end credits. That was Spencer's first summer workshop in the TL. And out of those humble beginnings have grown internationally recognized projects such as a.k.a. Don Bonus, Refugee and Who I Became
