Distinguishing VYDC from traditional social service agencies are
our arts and technology programs. In 1990, we initiated a Peer Resource
Program — peer counseling, leadership training, and community
service projects — to bring neighborhood youth together in the
spirit of personal responsibility and commitment to the community.
Central to the Peer Resource Program were the arts programs in public
art, theater, dance and video designed to encourage youth to share
their experiences and perspectives with other peers and through local
public events with Southeast Asian and general public audiences.
Hands-on collaborations with artist mentors have helped youth explore their skills and shared cross-cultural experiences with each other and other youth. The work produced through our art programs have connected powerfully with audiences of all cultural backgrounds.
