VYDC addresses the specific needs of refugee and immigrant youth population by offering high-risk youth with positive alternatives, where they feel safe and supported by their peers and their community. Youth development practices focusing on life skills training and delinquency prevention, which empower participants to effect positive changes in their world — to expand and explore their self-perception; build new and lasting relationships; and become actively involved in their community.

The current data collection and research project of the SF Youth Development Project is designed to enhance care planning and mental health services for high-risk newcomer girls, to develop training curriculum for institutions serving newcomer girls and to perform targeted outreach to newcomer girls and their families. The goals of the project is to identify and assess service capacities for girls in two newcomer communities (Central American/Mexican and Vietnamese/Cambodian). In partnership with Horizons Unlimited, VYDC will target young women from the Southeast Asian communities.
